Karma awoke in a cold sweat, he instinctively reached for a bat he would keep back at his Uncle’s house before he was shipped to this prison. His eyes darted around and upon realizing where he was he spewed a few curse words under his breath. Karma sat up and took a deep breath, “what a crazy f*#king dream… wait, did I leave that open?” He inquired, his eyes now focusing on his unlocked cell door. “If this is a test, you failed. Miserably,” Karma called out toward his door. He hopped out of bed and slipped into Gucci pajamas; shirt, bottom and sandals. He also grabbed various miscellaneous items he used in his pranks. “Hatsumomo, you’ll regret this,” He muttered a sly grin forming on his face as he left his cell and began walking the frozen hallways.
It was quiet and a red hue shone through the windows. Karma slowed to a halt when he spotted a guard standing in the middle of the hallway. He ducked around a corner and peeked down the hall. He was a still as a statue. Karma pulled out a couple small metal jacks and tossed them toward the other side of the hall where he was. They made loud pangs as they rattled down the corridor. Karma closed his eyes and held his breath then paused for a few moments, honing his hearing toward the guard. ‘He didn’t bite? Dumb guards always fall for that trick in my dreams,’ He thought disappointedly.
Suddenly he peered back toward the guard. Still as a statue. Suddenly Karma felt a weird feeling in his gut. He looked down the corridor he hid in, it was tinged in a red hue. Stepping toward the window he looked up into the sky. A blood red moon hung over the prison. It was ominious. “What the hell is going on…” He muttered. With a deep breath of preparation, Karma began walking down the hall toward the guard. When he noticed the guard was grey, the weird feeling returned. Karma waved his hand in the guard’s face before kissing his teeth. “I thought my last dream was weird,” He sighed. “I guess I’ll just go back to the auditorium,” He decided.
Upon his arrival, he saw the group of delinquents he ventured with recently and threw up his hands, “So it’s not a dream. We’re all really cursed…” He spoke aloud trying to rationalize it to himself. Using both thumbs and index fingers, Karma formed a camera and sized Sosuke up while he circled him. “You’re new. Must be that Jakuzure guy, Ms. Shima was talking bout. I’m Karma Diarmuid, I hope we both- no, all of us make it out of this one,” He introduced himself with a quick shake of the hands. As he stepped forward he shielded his eyes from the flash with his forearm.
“I haaate court rooms,” Karma admitted with a groan, agreeing with Meika’s earlier sentiments. He surveyed the auditorium, the shadow congregation seemingly morphing in and around itself.
"Sophie, Karma, Meika, and Sosuke. You ALL stand accused of crimes against shadow society. How do you plead? Guilty? or Guilty?" She spoke, her voice booming around the auditorium. The shadows in the stands jeered, and the jury stand remained empty.
Karma raised his hand, “I plea not guilty by reason of insanity!” He grinned widely before he erupted into a fit of chuckles. He nudged Sophie in the side and whispered smoothly, “if we’re deemed insane we escape jail time. We get sent to a nut house, not unlike our current imprisonment.”
"To judge you, we've assembled a jury of your peers- give a warm round of applause for the dead of Fushigi High, and the people they left behind so many years ago!"
The crowd booed and laughed as 8 blue will o the wisps appeared in the stands, and Kimiko and Hikaru would be thrust forward, into view of the crowd.
"You might be wondering where Masatou, our oldest friend, is. Word is he's long gone from here, completely forgetting us. Perhaps his lie will be happier, now."
Kimiko suddenly awoke in a very similar manner to the others: cold sweat and a feeling of intense fear looming over her like a thundercloud. She looked around frantically, making out eight blue will-o-wisps and… Hikaru? Her mind immediately rushed to an inappropriate place. She knew his reputation with the ladies. “Ugh, did I..? How cheesy, blue candle lights?” Her mind raced trying to make sense of the situation. As she continued to survey her surroundings Kimiko realized this ordeal was much worse than sleeping around with her coworkers. Her eyes fell on the group of student-inmates in front of them, then the shadowy congregation roaring for retribution. She tried to free herself of her restraints but it was no use, Kimiko was being held captive. Her eyes fell upon Karma and she quickly noted his similarities to K’oueh. She then turned to Hikaru, “this… it’s just like 8 years ago, isn’t it? I knew I wasn’t crazy.”
"And as for Santos, you may wonder...well, he suffered a very unfortunate accident on his way to freedom."
At this, the shadow court screamed into horrific laughter, the implication less than subtle.
"As you can tell..." The judge spoke to the group, bending lower, her voice growing deeper. "...we've become very lonely. So, who wants to go first?"
Karma spit toward the ground and kissed his teeth. “Do we get an appointed lawyer or are we defending ourselves?” He probed the largest Shadow, taking a step forward.
